As a born and raised Wisconsinite, I know the power of a good tailgate. There’s something so simple—yet also special—about cracking open a beer, throwing a football around and kicking back with friends and family.

For most tailgaters, their weapon of choice is a portable grill. And while we highly recommend a Weber Smokey Joe or the tricked-out Traeger Tailgater, it’s nice to have a third option. Say hello to the newly released Solo Stove cookout kit. This handy accessory package converts our favorite fire pit into your new grilling BFF.

The Solo Stove cookout kit is an ingenious option for grillers and backyard foodies. It takes your standard Solo Stove Bonfire fire pit and turns it into an outdoor kitchen. The set includes a cookout kit frame, charcoal adaptor and your choice of a standard grill top or griddle. The grill top features classic slats for achieving smoky char marks, while the griddle is a flat surface akin to a Blackstone top.

Setup is pretty simple: Just unfold the stand and place your Bonfire fire pit inside. Then, get the fire going with the charcoal adapter. When the coals are hot, it’s time to get grilling with the cast-iron grill grate or griddle.

The versatile design allows you to grill at a traditional standing height or lower in a cooking-’round-the-campfire way. It also features foldable legs and shelves for easy transport to the tailgate. Plus, like most Solo Stove products, the cookout kit is built to last. The set features durable, heat- and corrosion-resistant steel. We can’t wait to whip up all the best tailgating grilling recipes—whether at the stadium or in our own backyards.

Plus, once you’re done with your meal, you can remove the fire pit (after it’s cooled down, of course) and use as normal for s’mores.

Our crew of product reviewers and outdoor cooking enthusiasts have extensively reviewed Solo Stove gear; particularly in pursuit of the best outdoor pizza ovens and best smokeless fire pits. To date, we’ve evaluated the Solo Stove Bonfire, Pi pizza oven, Pi Prime and Terraflame s’mores bowl. At our sister brand, Family Handyman, we have a bonafide Solo Stove expert on staff. Mary Henn has covered the brand’s patio heater, chair, Pi Fire pizza oven and Mesa fire pit, among other products.

Across the board, we find Solo Stove gear lives up to the hype and elevates your backyard experience. Plus, it’s built to last. After our initial round of testing—in which we evaluate packaging, setup, performance, cleanup and value—top products make their way into the hands and homes of long-term testers. We continue to use the products for years to evaluate how they perform across their lifespan, noting any issues or defects along the way.

Mary has been using her Bonfire for over a year and is still smitten. “It’s a great, stainless steel smokeless fire pit,” she says. “I love that it’s backyard-size and portable, and what sets it apart from similar fire pits from different brands is its wide variety of compatible accessories. It’s also made with high-quality materials and made to last.”

The pit has withstood Midwestern weather, like wind, hail, rain and heat with no issues. It did become discolored pretty quickly, but that has more to do with fire than the elements. “You can expect your Solo Stove fire pit to change from silver to bronze the more you use it,” Mary explains. “I still love my Bonfire, and I haven’t had any issues with it, but I recommend buying the weatherproof cover to help keep water from pooling in the bottom after rain.”
